India's 5G rollout has been one of the fastest in telecom history. From the first commercial 5G services launched by Jio and Airtel in October 2022, coverage has expanded to over 700 cities by mid-2025. Over 120 million 5G subscribers are now active in India, according to TRAI data.

The consumer case for 5G is largely about faster downloads and better video streaming. The enterprise case is fundamentally different — and far more economically significant. 5G's combination of high bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and the ability to connect millions of devices per square kilometre unlocks industrial applications that 4G and Wi-Fi cannot reliably support.

Jio has deployed private 5G at Reliance's Jamnagar refinery complex, connecting thousands of sensors, autonomous vehicles, and inspection robots on a network isolated from public connectivity. Airtel has announced private 5G deployments at manufacturing facilities in Pune and Chennai. At Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai, 5G connectivity is being used to automate container tracking, crane operations, and vehicle navigation.

Globally, Deutsche Telekom's private 5G deployments in German automotive plants and Verizon's industrial 5G programmes in US manufacturing facilities demonstrate the pattern India is following.
